Symptoms Symptoms may not appear initially until the disease has progressed. These symptoms include constant coughing, lack of energy, difficulty with breathing, decreased appetite, loss of weight, gagging and vomiting (mainly in cats), and failure of the lung, kidney, liver, heart, eventually resulting in the death of the animal. Prevention is easy and available, usually in once-a-month doses. This is far preferable to treating the pet once the disease has taken hold. Treatment of the disease in dogs can actually be toxic and is very expensive. The treatment includes trips to the veterinarian’s office, blood tests, x-rays, and injections. The dog must have its activities controlled for at least a month or more, as well. There is no treatment available for felines at the present, although there are medicines to help with the symptoms.
